Children of Men answers and analysis

  1. STYLE: The similarity of children of men towards V for Vendetta is that don’t films have a quite dull setting, but in some of the parts in V are bright to show different perspectives of the emotions that are there but by adding lighting it takes away the realism of the film away. But then because COM isn’t a Hollywood film, it is meant to show that realism that V does create from using the natural lighting

  2. STYLE: Children of Men is an Independent film meaning it doesn't have to follow Hollywood conventions and has its own personal style. The camera is shaky and follows the characters in long takes making it more realistic then V for Vendetta and also making you feel as if you are involved in the film.. However in V for Vendetta the camera is steady and cuts between a number of different shots throughout the scene. This is because V is a Hollywood film and therefore follows the classic Hollywood conventions.

  3. GENRE: WAR

Both films raise the idea that “war is not the way to solve things” both through different ways, CoM through the use of actual warfare and the consequences of it, whereas V shows that ideas should be the war, no shots fired, just peaceful warfare to solve problems (the uprising scene best demonstrates this if we leave the element of V’s revenge causing the blowing up of parliament)

As an indie film, Children of Men raises the challenging idea of “is war really the route to solving problems?” by showing, graphic, actual warfare and the distress it creates

V is a Hollywood film that completely subverts the conventions of a war as no real warfare is actually involved and that the war here is a war of ideas

How does CoM compare with V (as a mainstream film) use of GENRE
Independent film, aiming to get across it’s genre without being sly, the use of the Sci-fi scenes clear and evident, given to us on a plate.
Much more discreet about the Sci-fi genre, making us look past the obvious and into the finer details.

Conclusion How do the films compare in using GENRE to create meaning/communicate MESSAGES?
    Genre-
Both films are similar in the way they get across their messages, the way in which the Sci-fi like scenes are presented vary, V for Vendetta makes us look past the obvious and allows us to think, Children of men displays a much more simple and clear message with the use of the Sci-fi Genre, and the impact it has on the film is very little.
